A possible bottleneck problem is expected to happen during this year’s eFiling tax submission as more than 1 million tax payers are estimated to use the system for 2007 income tax submission. Since its inception in 2003, the newly introduced online system has generated more and more interest, even though there are hiccups and loop holes discovered about the application, of which some of the discoveries were circulated in the blogosphere. LHDN has been working hard to attend to reports of technical issues and strived resolving them in timely manner.

The LHDN (Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri) CEO, Datuk Hasmah Abdullah, told, during a press conference 2 weeks ago, that the number of income tax returns received through eFiling had increased by 369%. In 2007, a total of 874,814 used eFiling as compared to 185,343 users in 2006.

This year, LHDN has also introduced two new key features. The first is the Roaming Public Key Infrastructure, which enables the taxpayers to file their income tax returns from any computer without the need to download the Digital Certificate repeatedly. The Digital Certificate is some sort of online signature which acts as an additional security feature for e-commerce applications.

The second feature is not applicable for the normal taxpayers, as it is a new feature that allows the tax agents to file their client’s forms through the eFiling method using the HASIL’s new developed eFiling software.

In light of the possible traffic issues, LHDN has advised the users to file their income tax as early as possible to avoid inconvenience. Too much traffic will delay the processing time and may return an error page, and this will tend to frustrate the users, who may eventually feel that it is better to use the normal income tax filing method.
