Interest Over Marketablitiy In Job Search

I was at USM today. Manning my company booth for the USM Science Expo Contest which attracted alot of students. My company was the main sponsor for the event, so we got the biggest booth strategically placed right in front of the main entrance.

I was there for about half a day and in the beginning, it was pretty boring as no students actually came over my booth as there were other ‘interesting’ booths out there. However, nearing noon a couple of MARA foundation program students came by and asked about career prospects and some job searching tips. I found that a bit funny and impressed as these students still had about 4 to 5 years to go before stepping into the employment world and here they are with this ‘advanced’ inquiry.

One of the students – a boy asked my personal opinion of which engineering course should he decide to pursue for degree program at the end of his foundation; Electronics, Mechanical or Chemistry. He told me that he had interest in Chemistry and have plans to work in Penang or KL. I did not actually give him a straight answer…but what i told him was somewhere along line;

When it comes to searching for jobs at this age, you need to make sure that the skills that you have is relevant and in demand. If you have interest in Chemistry, make sure that most companies here in Penang or KL (or whereever you want to work for) want to hire chemical engineer. Be sure that there are ample demand for this type of qualification. Once in a blue moon job advertisement yelling for Chemical grads to apply will NOT work! Too many unemployed Chemical grads out there for you to compete with.

In reality is, when choosing a course to pursue, choose a course which the job is in demand OR chose a niche course which has global appeal (nursing, chef, automotive mechanical etc). Choose a course that will help you GET a job. If the course of your interest has a dying demand or is so isolated in job prospect that you will face a tough time getting a job…my personal view is..it should not be your mainstream course to pursue.

How can you know or find out? One good way is for you to look at the job advertisement trend. It will give you a good idea on what are the jobs in demand and hence the qualification needed for it.

Well, after i ended…the boy said to me i changed his whole view. It made my day worthwhile.
