Due to lack of knowledge and expertise, many SOCSO members have chosen to use a third party or middlemen to help them making their compensation claim.
In return, these middlemen will charge them good money, which is up to 30% of the amount claimed to the member. Most of the members who use them come from the lower income group who are not well verse with the technical terms, processes and procedures.
That, however is about to change after SOCSO decided to introduce counselors which are now placed at its headquarter in KL, as well as its branches in Petaling Jaya, Penang, Seremban, Johor Bahru and Ipoh.
The counselor’s main role will be to help SOCSO contributors in applying for work protection, which is provided in two forms – the Employment Injury Insurance, and the Invalidity Pension Scheme. To better accommodate members, counselors appointed are those who are able to converse in multiple languages including Bahasa Malaysia, English, Chinese, Tamil and so on. Members are also advised not to use middlemen in their claim and turn to counselors instead for help.
In addition to the appointment of counselors, SOCSO has also recently come up with an anti fraud division, whose role is to scrutinize claims and weed out false claims. The organization recently discovered that more than 500 fraudulent claims were made using false identification documents in the recent run.

Currently, there are about 100 paramedics in Malaysia, a small number indeed.
Realizing the shortage, St John Ambulance of Malaysia (SJAM) and the Open University (OUM) will be collaborating to provide Diploma in Pre-Hospital course to generate more interest among the public and help producing more local paramedics.
Such course is the first to be introduced in the country, packaged together with online access facilities that allow the students to learn the syllabus from the comfort of their home.
The university will also conduct practical and hands-on training to expose the students with the realm of the life in emergency.
The syllabus will be devised and structured by St John Ambulance and Open University, and will be subject to approval from the Ministry of Health and the National Accreditation Board.
Career in paramedic requires a person to provide pre-hospital medical service, including treating emergency and trauma cases, as well on-the-scene treatment. A paramedic’s job is making sure patients are stabilized before sent to the hospital for further treatment.
