Forbes has named King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand as the richest royal in the world today, replacing the Brunei King, Sultan Haji Hassanah Bolkiah, who dropped to 4th this time around.
Bhumibol, 80, is estimated to have a personal net worth of $35 billion. He is the world’s longest monarch who has been at the helm for a long 62 years since 1946. He was 18 when he was made King of Thailand.
The King was born in the United States and received his early education in Switzerland.
Bhumibol is also very much loved by his country’s citizens, and is credited to bringing political stability and peace for the nation. He has, in a number of times, intervened with the country’s politic, with the most prominent one arguably being the 2006 Thailand coup, when the army toppled the government under the premiership of Thaksin Shinawatra.
Sheikh Khalifa Zayed Al Nahyan, the current President of UAE was second, followed by King Abdullah Abdul Azizi from Saudi Arabia. Both accumulated their share of fortunes through oil.
The 5th to 10th positions are occupied respectively by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid (UAE), Prince Hans-Adam II (Liechtenstein), Sheikh Hamad Khalifah Al Thani (Qatar), King Mohamed VI (Morocco), Prince Albert II (France) and Sultan Qobos bin Said (Oman). England’s Queen Elizabeth II, was 12th.
