26 Years Old Running RM1 Million Empire

By Zul • Jul 11th, 2007 • Category: Going entrepreneur

In 2005, Exabytes Sdn Bhd, a Malaysia web hosting company posted a revenue of RM1.7 millions and still continues to grow. The founder of Exabytes is only a 26 year old guy by the name of Chan Kee Siak (I only realized this after 3 years being an Exabytes customer). Instead of following typical foot steps of normal college graduates finding jobs, he instead chose to be an entrepreneur. As the saying goes, ‘if you can’t get a job, create one!’ (In the case of Chan, he created not one but many).

His venture started some way back in 2001 when he was doing some part time and freelancing job while still a college student. He realized while helping a client setting up a website and finding web host for them, the number of affordable and reliable web hosting providers in Malaysia are very much limited.

From there he made a further analysis on some hosting providers overseas, and finally signed up as a reseller with one of them, and propelled the company we know as Exabytes until what it is today. As of today, Exabytes is serving over 6000 clients including local and overseas clients. Their main office is located in Bayan Baru, Penang, catering for over 20 employees that cover the technical area, support, administration and so on.

Off course, it wasn’t all roses before the company achieve its success today. There are many challenges faced including competitions from existing and new web hosting companies, in which they responded by giving more added-value services to their client. Exabytes are also active giving out promotional goodies, lucky draw contests to attract loyalty and add more clients.

  1. I’m thinking about switching my blog to my own domain but am still looking for a web-host. From your experience with Exabytes, can you share your experiences, good or bad? How is their service? Response time when something is broken? etc? Thanks in advance, Zul.

  2. I have used 3 different companies in Malaysia and from my own experience so far they’re the most satisfactory in terms of support and customer service. I still use them for buying domains. However, as far as web hosting is concerned, I use hostgator, cost more but much bigger space.

  3. I’ve been using mesrahosting for quite some time and services are very good. Now for basic Linux hosting is only cost rm100/year for 10GB. That’s quite huge..i’m happy with it

  4. Mesra’s offerings are not bad too, but didn’t have some features I looked for.
