As we all know the government implemented a 5-day work week (for civil servants) in 2005 after thorough studies and researches. It is shown that countries in the European continent and US have implemented the same system and they have been successfully achieved the same capacity of productivity (while on a 6-day work week).
Therefore, Malaysia (among other Asian countries) took the initiative to follow such a system and also make sure that important services such as bill payment or passport renewal departments to continue working on Saturdays so that the public can get their business done, especially for those who can’t make it during weekdays.
The government also ensures that the 24-hour online services are available to the public to help save time so that the public won’t have to queue up at the government departments and wait for a long time to get their businesses done.
However, do you agree that the productivity of 5-day work week remains the same with 6-day work week?
It seems that the productivity is not getting any better with complaints being made about the effectiveness of the 24-hour online services. It seems that most of us still prefer over-the-counter services rather than using online services.
Working 6 days a week should be able to maintain high productivity and high quality of services to those who are in need (the public). The truth is there is a lot of work to be done to improve the 24-hour online services because personally, the 24-hour online services is not as easy (or perfect) as it seems.
While at one point, this is a good head start for the government to be more effective in providing excellent services to the public but at another point, the system itself is not as good as the other countries. Still, we can all hope that the government would be able to deliver what they have promised to us (rakyat).
6 working days a week seems to be a good idea as well, if not the best idea of all.
Are you a civil servant? What do you think?
