Another historic break is here for Malaysians to witness as AirAsia’s long haul flight business, AirAsia X, gets worldwide recognition and was voted as the world’s Best Newcomer in the 2008 Budgies Award in London, yesterday.

The Budgies Award, which goes by the long name of the Budgies World Low Cost Airline Awards, is the most prestigious accord for low-cost and budget carriers, featuring best of breed airline brands from all around the world.

It is held on annual basis to extend recognition and honor the accomplishments, achievements and contributions of budget airlines.

The AirAsia X operates long distance flights from and to Gold Coast, Perth, Melbourne (Australia) and Hangzhou (China), and is highly anticipated to launch its inaugural flight to London within a period of 1 year. It commenced its first flight in 2007 and the business was made even more vibrant after the Virgin Group’s head honcho, Richard Branson agreed to invest his personal money and bought a 20% stake in Air Asia X. In one historic event, both Virgin and AirAsia’s founders, Richard and Tony Fernandes, who used to work together in Virgin Music, were re-united.

The company’s CEO, Azran Osman Rani, who was also nominated for Best CEO award, was all ecstatic with the achievement, which has once again strengthened the Malaysia name in the world map. Earlier this year, AirAsia was named among the world’s 50 most innovative companies, as surveyed and published by the international Fast Company magazine. AirAsia is the first and only company in Malaysia to achieve the feat, and is also the only company from Asia to be featured in the 2008 list.
