Best Countries with Unemployment Benefits

Denmark yet again proves why it is a country of choice after a research found that it provides the best unemployment benefits and pay to laid off workers.

It leads a host of European countries in the World’s Best Places for Unemployment Pay table, published in Forbes in June 2008.

In coming up with the table, the unemployment systems for 30 of the world’s largest countries and economies were studied and examined, and various aspects of life were assessed including purchasing power parity (PPP), relative values of currencies, basket price of commodities, consumer prices, inflation and so on.

As an assumption, the average workers in the study were 30 years old, and have been employed for the past five years, had no children, and were active in job seeking.

Denmark is followed by Norway, Finland, Luxemburg, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland.

Danes who find themselves retrenched or laid off by their employer are eligible to receive unemployment pay for up to 90% of their average earnings, up to four years, provided they worked 52 weeks over the previous 3 years. The unemployed job seekers in Norway can also consider themselves fortunate as they can receive 87.6% of their previous pays for up to 500 days.

The figures are in stark contract to the unemployment benefits provided by the United States, where the unemployed can only receive an average of 27% of their income.

Japan tops the Asian region with up to 67% of income benefits.

Apart from having the best employment benefits, Denmark was also recently named as the world’s happiest country, and the best country to do business, both for the year 2008.
