BMW, the German automaker, is giving some boosts to the job market in the United Kingdom (UK) after revealing its plan to build new models of Mini at its main plant in Cowley.
Two new models will be unveiled in due time at the Frankfurt motor show later this month, with the Cowley factory, already operating at near full capacity, responsible for the volume production. By year end, the plan is estimated to produce more than 200,000 cars for both local and export markets.
And with the introduction of the new models, inevitably and surely, the company will be looking forward to create more job opportunities and stimulates a more vibrant economic activity in UK. It wasn’t sure how many new jobs will be created, but analysts expect the number can go as high as between 2,000 and 3,000. Currently, the plant in Cowley employs about 4,000 workers.
The Mini is a popular car brand and models, owned by the BMW Group, and is presently available in a three main versions – hatchback, Clubman and convertible. The Mini Cooper was named as North American Car of the Year in 2003, and was featured in the popular remake of The Italian Job movie.
BMW laid of close to 1,000 temporary workers during the recent economic downturn, but sources said many of them have been rehired back to accommodate the rising in demand in the Mini models.
