Chew Fang Chin, a professional local artist is soon to become the fist Sarawakian holding a solo painting exhibition in the United States, reaching a major milestone and getting the biggest break of his career so far.
Interestingly enough, Chew holds a Degree in Law and decided to follow his dream by becoming a professional artist after 10 years graduating. He completed his Law degree in 1972 from the National University of Taiwan, Republic of China, and in 1983, he decided to go on a different career platform - drawing. A bold step indeed.
For long, he has been captivated with the colorful lifestyle of the various indigenous people of his native state, Sarawak. His love for cultural heritage, tradition and crafts brought him places to different regions of the states, and he embarked into a journey settling from one place to one place to learn more about the people’s cultures and transpired them into paintings. Chew’s paintings combine traditional Chinese techniques and modern western approach and the combination certainly produces unique drawings.
Chew’s painting collections today are exhibited in various countries and regions including Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Australia, United States as well as in the Europe.
The three week solo exhibition in the US will be hosted by Luzerne County Community College in Pennsylvania on Friday 4 April 2008.
Moral of the story? Cherish your passion. Follow your heart. Do what you love to do, and the money will follow.
