If you are a smoker, be prepared to pay more for cigarette starting this 1 January 2010. According to Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, a pack of 20’s (cheapest cigarette) would cost RM6.40.
Can you imagine the prices for expensive cigarette?
Currently the price for a pack of 20’s (expensive cigarette) would cost RM9.30 and RM4.80 for the cheapest cigarette. It would be more than RM10 if you want to buy expensive cigarette.
Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai added that this new regulation will set the minimum retail price for a stick of cigarette to 32sen.
This is perhaps the best way to encourage smokers to quit smoking. It is proven that by raising the tax on tobacco products, there seems to be less smokers. In Malaysia alone, the rate of smokers has dropped 3.8% with a 10% increase in cigarette prices.
Apart from encouraging smokers to quit smoking, this new regulation will make the cigarette less affordable for youth and children. Hopefully this regulation will automatically stop them from trying to smoke.
Take it as a motivation if you are on your way to quit smoking. With high living cost to think about, quit smoking doesn’t seem to be a bad idea at all in order to save money. Think about your family.
Although going for cheap cigarette might be a solution, why not try to quit smoking once and for all?
