New civil servants in Malaysia will get shorter number of annual leaves beginning 2009.
Instead of the usual 30 days, they will be given 25 days of allocation. Those who have been long time government servants can also choose to cut their annual leaves in an effort to promote efficiency and productivity.
However, the police force, army, education and maritime officers are exempted from the move.
In exchange for the shorter leave entitlement, the civil servants are promised a bigger ‘golden handshake’ in the form of cash disbursement when they retire. Previously, the pensioners will get a 120-day cash, and with the latest move, cash paid will amount to 150 days.
This means, a civil servant who earns RM1,500 salary per month will get RM7,500 (150 days) golden handshake cash instead of RM6,000 (120 days) upon retirement.
While the 5 days cut seemed unfair to certain quarter, 25 days leave is certainly a much generous entitlement as compared to the private sector, with many of the civil servants would finish the year without having to consume all leaves.
The Employment Act 1955 indicates that the annual leave can start as low as 8 days, with many of the private companies giving between 10-14 days of holidays.
