Community Colleges to Train Jobless Graduates

The Education Ministry is in the planning to use community colleges around the country to help jobless graduates through training and improve their employability.
The training program will be in addition to those initiatives already offered by universities and colleges, and will be particularly useful for graduates from courses that do not have high market value in the employment market.
At the moment, effort is being taken by the universities to set up ‘polishing school‘ for graduating students.
The community colleges were first set up in 2001 to train school leavers and since then more than 30 colleges have been established, providing a wide range of courses to local students nationwide. Their relative close proximity to the students’ home provides an easy learning and education access.
The colleges started by offering short courses but now have expanded to provide certificate and diploma programs. With the latest engagement, jobless graduates will be trained to acquire skills which are in demand in the industry and the employment market, and eventually enhance their marketability and employability.
Record with the Human Resource Ministry shows that more than 40,000 unemployed graduates are now registered with the ministry’s portal, Electronic Labor Exchange (ELX). More than 15,000 out of the 40,000 have been offered jobs so far through ELX.
