Dell Malaysia Cut 700 Jobs

700 Dell Malaysia workers are set to lose their jobs through the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) exercise beginning from next month as the notebook manufacturer began to reduce its size here even more. The VSS is expected to last for a few months, with the last affected batch of workers to leave in June next year.

The workers are based in Bukit Minyak, Penang, currently undertaking roles such as production operators, supervisors and managers.

Dell Corporate Communications Senior Manager, Jasmine Begum, has confirmed the exercise with the news and presses. According to her, the VSS was introduced as a cost-cutting strategy as the company is beginning to shift the division that manufactures notebooks for US, Canada and Latin America regions to the group’s global manufacturing network. The move will allegedly speed up delivery time and enhance the quality of their products.

What’s left for the Bukit Minyak plant will be the notebook manufacturing facilities catering for the South Asian and Australian markets. While the production division appears to be shrinking, the company plans to continue hiring for supply chain, procurement and finance related positions in time to come.

This is not the first VSS for Dell this year. The first one was introduced in March, affecting some 5% of its workers.

Up until this year, Dell Malaysia has about 4,500 workers. With the latest VSS taking place, the workforce size will be reduced to 3,8000 employees. Dell was once considered as one of the Penang ‘big boys’ manufacturers.
