Try to pick out in which area you want to be in as a journalist, say print media or the electronic media. The more creative you are in your brain the more successful you are bound to be. Getting to know what to write about a particular topic is particularly essential. It should sell.

The public in general should be attracted by your writing. The words and the type of sentences used should be touchy and liked by the cross sections of the people reading it, for example the newspaper. You should be able to give the readers the joy and the impetus to be in touch with a particular newspaper through your writing.

A basic education with a degree in journalism from a reputed institute would definitely help you to be a journalist of repute. You should be able to create a separate niche for you through your writing. No one would disagree that even after having a degree in journalism you should have that extra analytical approach and juicy writing skill to be a journalist. Before getting associated with a media house of repute it is advisable to work as a trainee journalist with some experienced persons in this sector.

Definitely you have some specific area of interest in reporting or writing. Try to identify and see whether you are better positioned as a sports journalist or an economic news reporter. Keep abreast with all the data available on the specific area of your work and update yourself every moment. So coming to the question of how to be a journalist, it can be answered as –

1. Be creative and understand as to what pattern of writing will sell
2. Work hard and update every moment
3. The language used should be simple as well as catchy to the general public

Another form of reporting is through the electronic media and that calls for journalism of a little different type in additions to the basic requirements of a print media journalist. Obviously the presentation skills play a very important factor and the clarity of voice while reporting is very vital.

As a whole your image should have a value in the eyes of the people watching you on television. You can be a journalist in the electronic media only if you have the hunger to be ahead in the competition. The competition is cut-throat and so anyone to become a journalist working in this arena besides having a degree or diploma in mass communication should be close to the audience because the public in general will not go for your educational degree but by your approach. So a correct approach in reporting with cent percent clarity will take you a long way to be a successful journalist

Lastly, know that you can be a journalist in a related field only if you have the desire to work hard and have an attitude of never to give up on the face of challenge. Only hard work pays of at the end and you should have the patience to bear it and meet the challenges and overcome it. Remember there is no substitute of hard work and the work of a journalist definitely needs a lot of effort.

Do you know the date for Boss Day?

Well, Boss Day falls on October 16 in United States. The purpose is obvious, to celebrate our boss.

What about Malaysia?

Apparently Boss Day is not popular in Malaysia. By doing a search on Google Malaysia, nothing comes up that is related to Boss Day.

That doesn’t mean you cannot celebrate Boss Day in Malaysia.

If you have really good boss, you can show some appreciation by:

• sending an e-card
• flowers
• get something that is useful – a pen, a diary, even a bookmark is useful
• wish him/her a “Happy Boss Day” – you will definitely make your boss happy

Therefore, some of us will have to join the workforce after SPM or STPM.

After a few years working and you have some money saved up, what would you do?

Do you want to go to a college or university to further your studies (perhaps this is something you have always wanted to do)?

It is not a bad idea to go to a college or university even though you have been working for a long time because you can have a career change once you get your diploma or degree.

You might not want to change your career but with a degree you can move up in the company (i.e. get promoted easily). I am sure you are eager to advance in your career, rather than being stuck in current position for 5 years.

If you are in the government sector, it would be easy to further your studies because you can apply for scholarships.

For example, the government in Sabah wants all KEMAS teachers to have at least a diploma in education to provide the best quality of early education for kids. In order to achieve the goal, the government sponsors all KEMAS teachers who do not have a diploma to further their studies and get a diploma in education.

Not everyone is lucky enough to get a sponsor but if your company endorse such a program, you might want to apply for it. Otherwise, once you have enough savings, it is time to further your studies using your own money. Some people might even consider getting an education loan but this must be done carefully.

The most important of all, you get the education that will change your life.

1. Facebook

You sign up, update your personal information, upload an image and add some friends. What else? Linked In is a career-oriented social networking site. There is a section that allows you to find a job. You can find your clients on Linked In, network with them and request for recommendations.

4. Google

Use the search engine to find a job. This is a common trick and yet not everyone knows how to do it.

Just type in something like “job vacancies” and you get more than a million of results.

Google is also good for researching. If you want to work with ABC Sdn Bhd, be sure to research the background of ABC Sdn Bhd and find out as much as possible about the company. It would be helpful during your interview.

5. Free emails – Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail

When you are using free emails to apply for a job, be sure to sign up for a proper email address. A proper email address indicates professionalism.
