Graduate School of Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is recently hailed as one of Malaysia’s top business schools and is now receiving a grant worth RM25 million. Out of the RM25 million, about half will go into the development and improvement of infrastructure, while the remaining would be allocated for the human development purpose.
The selection of GSM-UPM as one of the top schools is part of the government’s effort to recognize and make public the name of leading academic institutions, in line with the attempt to transform Malaysia as an international center of educational excellence. That sounds like a tall order, considering that the country’s best university, Universiti Malaya (UM) currently lies at the base of the world’s top 200 universities ranking.
To be the world’s leading business schools, Malaysia would need to be among the top in Asia, and in order to achieve that, the first thing it needs to do is to edge the dear neighbor, Singapore. In 2008, three of Singapore-based business schools – INSEAD, Nanyang and NUS (National University of Singapore) were ranked among the top 10 business schools in Asia by QS Top MBA ranking. How’s that for a start.
Apart from GSM-UPM, another business school chosen as part of the excellence is Graduate Business School of UKM (GBS-UKM), which edged out 10 other short listed competitions that offer MBA courses and other business related programs. USM, which was the first university granted the APEX status, did not get the recognition.
