Job Seeker - Look From The Employer’s Eye

By Premkumar • Apr 28th, 2008 • Category: Career

The complaint goes on. Why aren’t any companies hiring fresh graduates? If no one gives freshies a chance, where can they get one? I can bet you, almost 95% of new jobseekers will say it out (LOUD). The painful fact is true..most companies don’t hire fresh graduates and this trend is unlikely to change in the near future.

It is high time that new jobseekers understand why this happens. Hopefully, by understanding the reasons, they will be able see the whole job seeking adventure in a new perspective.

First of all, companies are not socially obligated to provide jobs to fresh grads. Companies especially the big ones (which most fresh grads want to work for) are organizations that have been set up for one purpose only - make profit. Hiring fresh grads are seen as not productive and therefore not profitable. Fresh grads need to be trained, need to be supervised and need to be given time to develop - to the company, this translates to cost - unnecessary cost. You just can’t blame them, just imagine you having your own business - wouldn’t you want to minimize the cost and maximize your profit? That is what is happening here.

Fresh Graduate Jobs in MalaysiaSecond, the effect of globalization. Companies needs to compete at a faster pace and new competitors are emerging with all sorts of new technologies. Survival is the name of the game. Therefore, it is more important now than ever for companies to recruit people with experience who can bring in the expertise needed in order to compete at the highest level. These companies need people who can start work right away.

Third, based on my observation all these years, the education standard has dropped and so too does the quality of fresh grads. The learning modules in universities are so outdated that it is no longer relevant to the operation needs of the company. This is of course not the fault of the jobseeker but nevertheless they become a part of this problem.

So what does this all mean to the fresh jobseeker out there…simple…

  1. There are jobs available in the market - be less choosy. Take jobs as part of your learning curve
  2. Make yourself relevant to the industry that you are interested in. If you are interested in HR - know what is actually HR and what HR people do (not 10 years ago but currently)
  3. Take time to learn up the art of applying for jobs (resume writing, self presentation etc) - perfect your skill in applying for jobs
  4. Apply! Apply! Apply! - don’t let a few failures in getting jobs frustrate you - attend as many jobs interviews as you can because each interview you go to makes you a better interviewee for the next one
  5. Know the secret. It is not whether you will get a job, it is WHEN you will get a job. It is only a matter of time so be motivated all the time.

Many fresh job seekers get frustrated and angry at the fact that they are not given a chance. I hope this article helps you to understand that this trend is to be expected and not to be frown upon. Persistence pays off.

Good luck!
