Makcik PC the Slimmest in the World

MIMOS has recently introduced ‘Makcik PC’, which is allegedly ‘the slimmest PC in the world’. It was launched on Friday and officiated by the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Abdullah Hj Ahmad Badawi.

MIMOS, which is acronym for Malaysia Institute of Microelectronic Systems, was founded in 1985, thanks to the effort made by a number of academicians in early 1980s, which was led by Dr Tengku Mohd Azman Sharifadeen, the Dean of School of Engineering University of Malaya (UM).

MIMOS Berhad (no, it is not a public listed company) is wholly owned by the Malaysia government and is responsible to carry out Research and Development (R&D) initiatives that will introduce more home-grown technologies to the world. MIMOS is engaged with more than 10 major institutions in the country in its effort to conduct Research & Development work.

In late 2006, Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah took over the reign as MIMOS’ Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from Tengku Azman.

Previously, MIMOS was also injected with other roles in IT Policy and Business Development but then the two were removed and R&D remains as its core expertise until today.

If you remember Jaring internet service, yes, it was brought by MIMOS in 1991. Other than that, not many breakthrough products and technological advances were known to be introduced to the local market and MIMOS was considered an entity living ‘under the radar’.

As a matter of fact, sadly, many do not realize the existence of MIMOS even though they were named R&D Organization of the Year by international technology industry analyst Frost & Sullivan in September 2007.

Makcik PC by Mimos - the Slimmest PC in the WorldBack to the Makcik PC, it is a PC powered with touch screen panel and has an affordable tag price which ranges from RM530 to RM1100. The main initiative to develop Makcik PC is to produce more affordable and more user friendly PC application. Makcik PC is targeted to be used by many level of generations, including those elderly and the Otai’s!.

Judging from the price, it is very likely that the PC is powered by average type microchip processor. They are yet to announced when this Makcik PC is available in the retail market.

I hope there will be more to come from MIMOS.

seen the pictures.. it look like a cheap quality tablet pc…. MIMOS should just scrap this project and try to produce something to penetrate the low – mid range laptop market segment preferably around the RM 500 – 2000 price range. Its better to start low and mastering the basics instead of trying to jump to something complicated like a tablet PC with touch screen and homebuild operating system. To me a typical 15″ laptop with 2.4 Ghz processing power, 512 MB or ram, and a windows xp home operating system is good basic system for elderly women (makcik – makcik) to start with.
