Malaysia University English Test (MUET)

MUET or the Malaysia University English Test is an English competency and proficiency assessment for students and taken as part of the public university admission.

Private universities and colleges in Malaysia, including those offering twinning and partnership courses, do not normally require the candidates to sit for MUET.

The exam, which takes place twice per year, is recognized by the education authorities in Malaysia and Singapore.

Those who intend to apply for foreign universities, particularly in the United Kingdom and United States, will have to sit for other English competency exams such as English 1119 (mostly taken during SPM), IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) as MUET is not recognized by the universities in the countries.

The first round of MUET exam is normally held between April and June, while the second between September and November.

Four components make up the whole MUET assessment, namely Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. The overall result is graded through band system, i.e. from Band 1 to Band 6, with Band 6 the most competent and Band 1 the poorest.

The examination is held at the test centers designated by the Malaysia Examination Council (Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia or MPM) across the country. Currently, a fee of RM60 is incurred for candidates taking MUET exam, with a review to abolish the fee in the discussion.
