Good demand for pharmacist jobs in Malaysia

According to Dr Ng Bee Hong who is one of the speakers at The Star Education Fair 2007, job prospect for pharmacists in Malaysia is very good. She also added that fresh graduates in pharmacy field will nof find themselves unemployed as they will be attached with the government for three years after their studies.

Speaking to The Star, she dispelled the misconception that pharmacists are those who merely doing tasks like selling vitamins and dispensing medication, and state that there are other prospects in the pharmaceutical field including academic, retail, manufacturing, research and enforcement.

“Aspiring pharmacists can also go into quality management of pharmaceutical manufacturing or regulatory matters related to pharmaceutical manufacturing such as registration of pharmaceutical products and compliance to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). There are also many places where a pharmacist can choose to work in such as retail pharmacies, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and the Health Ministry’s Pharmacy Division,” said Dr Ng who is the section manager of re-search and development at Hovid Berhad, a pharmaceutical manufacturing company.

To get to know more about the field, turn up for her talk from 6.15pm to 7pm on Feb 10 at The Star Education Fair 2007 which will be held at the Penang International Sports Arena.

Thought of working in Malaysia as a pharmacist? Think twice. Fresh malaysian graduates are tied to the government for 4 years including housemanship. Salary is about RM3,500 including bonus, allowances. In australia, you can earn an average of AUD $67,500 after about a year or two once you have graduated. See the differences? However, I would like to point out that IF, the separation of prescribing and dispensing occurs in the next 5-10 years. Pharmacists’ salary will jump by a big margin. Hopefully, that day comes. Medical Doctors in malaysia is just too ignorant.

P.S : I don’t mean to bash Malaysia. Just my two cents. I am a student in australia and know that 99% of the pharmacy students here do not go back, unless they are sponsored students.

I know in Malaysia, pharmacist don’t earn as much as pharmacist in UK or Australia. But RM 3 500 for a start, it’s pretty good. Besides, if you’re working with the government, there’s plenty of benefit and your pay will increase to RM 6 000 (after sometime). If you work with the private sector, it can get to as high as RM 7 000 and that is brilliant. Food and cost of living in Malaysia isn’t very high. So pharmacists can be quite well off, it’s not really that shitty.

And hopefully with pharmacists dispensing right (which should come into force soon, hopefully!) there’s hope for higher and higher salary (yummy!).

Although, I do not deny that working in UK is very attractive. The income of pharmacist in UK is like RM 14 000 per month for goodness sake! Too bad, I just have to refuse it because I am sponsored by the government. But I am rather positive about working in Malaysia. There are other things I needed to consider like being close to family etc…

how long exactly will it takes to do the housemanship?
    some said..3 years..others said only 1 year..
and can be done in hosp..whether gov..private..industry..or retail..
    is it true?
can anyone explain it to me.

p/s: i think most of msian doctors reject the idea of dispensing right..coz they scared ..it will cut down their salary..or maybe their reputation?:P
    hehe..
    no offence

Hi! I’m a 3rd yera pharmacy student. for fresh graduate in Malaysia, U will be tied by gov for 4 yrs compulsory service (1 yr housemanship (a.k.a PRP) plus 3 yrs compulsory service) if U are being sponsored by gov, plus another 2 yrs, making it 6 yrs

As far as I concern, U need 2 undergo housemanship in any gov hospital

It’s a fact there’ll be a huge oversupply of pharmacists very soon in Malaysia. Just look at how many local pharmacy schools & tie-ups with foreign schools appeared over the last 6 years. They’ve graduating HEAPS of pharmacists!

As for seperating “dispensing” from “prescribing” functions, 2 words: FORGET IT. The doctor lobby is TOO POWERFUL to allow that to happen. They’ve always had significant political connections and have spent over a million RM for their education – they’ll not allow any reduction in income, ever. Stop dreaming, please.

Instead, your pharmacist salaries’re going to dip when the oversupply worsens.

No doubt for those who work overseas earn higher wages, such as Aus or UK, but you also have to consider a very important factor, the cost of living.
i am referring to Azzy’s post, RM 14,000 per month, thats like 2,000 pounds, and i am sure those who live in the UK have to admit how expensive things are over there.

I’m not sure whether your cousin is still actively seeking for a pharmacist job in Malaysia. I am seriously looking for pharmacist to work in Ipoh, which is around 2 hours drive from the Kuala Lumpur. Feel free to contact me if she’s interested with this offer. Your cousin just have to make sure whether she can practice in Malaysia as a pharmacist. Thanks.
