The SPM result 2008 (for candidates sitting SPM examination in 2007) will be released this coming Wednesday, 12 March 2008, involving more than 400,000 students nationwide. Students will be able to obtain their results at 10am onwards from their respective schools, while private candidates will get their result through post. It’s time for yet another round of celebration with the likes of Nur Amalina (17 1As in SPM 2005) clones expected to appear on the front pages of the mainstream media (Unless the top student is from Kelantan – like last year). Soon after, the celebration and the hype will slowly disappear, and a new a debate will soon take over. The topic – the declining quality of the Malaysia education. Well, that’s how it seems to look for the past few years. Predictable.
Once you have got your exam result, you’d probably be asking, “What’s next?” This should not be a concern merely to the involved students, but to us and the society in general. Our younger sister, brother, nieces, cousins, relatives and children might have been one of those sitting in last year’s SPM exam and are now nervously waiting for the result. By now perhaps 1-2% of the over 400,000 students, the so-called the creams of the society have been swiped away by scholarship providers to pursue A-Levels or degree preparation program locally or abroad. But our main concern is not this minority bunch but rather the remaining 98% of them. Many are still unclear about their direction and we want them to get their hands to the best option.
Here are some of the things you can do after the SPM result.
1. Apply and enroll in university
Seems like the most obvious option, and most popular choice. It sounds as logical as the aliens returning back to their mother ship after an invasion. People enroll themselves in university with a Degree scroll at the back of their mind. Theoretically, you will go through 4 years (for most courses, but for few others like Medicine take longer) before you can graduate with aplomb, and a scroll in hand. Apart from the public universities, private institutions are also around to be chosen, with some of them able to provide scholarship and funding aid. Yes, enrolling in private universities always means higher cost.
2. Take Diploma
Another bunch of students choose to take up Diploma – which is not a problem at all as long as you keep the intention to further continue your study whenever there is an opportunity. In fact, I found quite many excellent Diploma students in a number of Polytechnics (e.g. Politeknik Ungku Omar, POLIMAS, Politeknik Seberang Perai etc) and several private institutions. From my own observation, Diploma courses are very compact – most subjects are relevant to your course and you can make use of them almost immediately once out of the college.
A student who has completed a Diploma can always choose to continue for a Degree (which will take another year or so). The good thing about Diploma is that you will have the option to gain working experience, and then take a break from employment to complete your degree. This is way better than going a 4-year stretch of getting a Degree with little or no exposure in the working environment. But with advantages come the risky part. Once you’re working and you’re drown with the habit of getting monthly income, your motivation to continue study may drop, and perhaps soon disappear into thin air. Don’t let this happen to you.
3. Continue with STPM, A-Levels or other foundation programs
Certain people believes that STPM and A-Levels may hinder your ambition to make a good career start as it takes longer than Matriculation (Matrics is normally one year). Some also say that those who enroll in the 2-year STPM (actually it is 1.5 years) are taking the opportunity to ‘buy or waste some time’ before deciding what they want to do in their life – which can be true depending on the student’s intention. However, even it is true, I don’t feel it is a bad option to pursue with STPM before deciding what you really want to do next rather being influenced by others (e.g. your parents or simply pengaruh rakan sebaya) to pick a field of study which you later realize is not your area of interest.
Contrary to popular notion – STPM is not honeymoon years just like Form 4. Honeymooning will result in bad exam results, and the consequence of it – you will be going nowhere afterwards, so don’t take it for granted. On the other hand, STPM is not the hardest exam of all either. We heard many people saying that STPM is one of the toughest, perhaps the toughest exam in this world, to which I ask – have they taken all other examinations in this world?
4. Go study in Singapore
Friends have been recommending to consider Singapore as education destination, and my own experience led me to believe this is one good recommendation. Singapore-educated workers are more competent, fast and skillful in their job. Where education is concern, the least we can say is – Singapore has its university in the ranking of top 50 universities in the world, and Malaysia has non in the top 200. We may have concern about the expenditure and fees, but if we can get hold of the scholarships available (notably the ASEAN Scholarship) then most expenses are pretty much covered. Also, the Singaporean government’s emphasis on quality education has made most of the local banks willingly able to provide study loan to local and international students.
5. Get certification
Enroll into MLVK. Go to community college, IKM, ILP and so on. There are also multinational and local corporations who are willing to take students out of school and sponsor their studies (short to immediate term) and at the end of the day provide them jobs. Automotive companies like Toyota and Perodua are good examples of this. The good thing about these kind of courses and certifications is that they prepare you to be independent once you are out of the institution. In other words, it teaches you to be an entrepreneur. I know this is not a popular option especially for those aspiring to get their hands on a Degree scroll, but you will be surprised to learn how many of those graduates will eventually end up working with people who were merely holding MLVK certification and the likes.
6. Find a job
Also, this is not a popular choice but can be the best and sometimes the only option available for certain people. For example, my good friend had to quit his education even before taking the SPM examination when his father passed away unexpectedly. He is the eldest son, and with his mother unable to do physical work, he becomes the sole breeder for the family. This is also an option for those unable to land at any of the options outlined above. At least, it is better than doing nothing. Perhaps, something good will come in your way while you are working.
So, have you examined your choices and options, and are you prepared to make a decision and take the necessary courses of actions upon receiving your SPM result?

You should pursue with whatever you want to do. However, unless you are willing to change your study strategy and exam preparation, you will be facing a daunting task.
Also, go one step further beyond saying ‘I have interest in science stream and not art stream’ by analyzing what you want to do in your career. Chemistry, Biology and Physics are distinguished subjects and you may end up using only one of them in your career. A doctor needs Biology, a Mechanical/Electrical Engineer needs Physics, a Chemist needs Chemistry and so on. Weigh your options, discuss with people around you, and make a wise choice.

You can apply for A-Levels in the likes of KDU, Taylor’s College and INTI (Cambridge Board) or UCSI and HELP (London Board). If you get an overseas scholarship, then you’d need not worry about the places as your scholarship provider will coordinate for you. But to get more information and to make the best choice, I suggest you to keep in touch with the nearest British Council office as they’d be happy to assist those who aspire to further British education.

Heyyyy everyone !!! I am like seriously confuse what course to take ! I am a science stream student and I have obtained my SPM results 07 ( yeah like all the 90′s homosapiens ) and i’ve obtained straight A’s .
But oh well the problem is I am seriously like interested with journalism ! yeah but everyone were saying its really a waste to join that course coz my science subs are really strong . so how could i actually pursue science courses like pharmacy(which i am intersted too) and oh well do journalism in future ? do u think its possible ?!? have any suggestions ? pls i need help. and my GCE-O is an A1

i just came back from an education fair in klcc, and i found many brochures. as i doing much research, i still cant make up my mind which college i should enter. im interested in taking Diploma of Pharmacy. but i don know whether my result is very good(BM,BI-3B, BIO,CHE,PHY-6C). maybe i can enter wif my result, but i still confuse whether i must take STPM in Science or taking Foundation in Science will have a more bright learning in my Science as my SPM Science result is not as much flying colour.

STPM is STPM. A-Level is 1.5-year preparation program for British universities mainly, but it is a worldwide recognized qualification that allows you to most universities (perhaps with some additional requirements, depending on universities). A-Level is relatively more expensive. You can take less subjects than STPM (e.g. 3).

hello , i heard rumors that if you fail sejarah you won’t get your SPM cert ( just like if you failed Bm ) May i know if it’s true? Thank you in advance , i’m taking spm this year

i got A- for mathematics in my spm. and E in my add maths, and a D for my sej. i plan to go for form 6. i duno wat shud i go for..maths or sej class…i want go 4 the maths class..bt every1 scares me by saying..its hard…everyone fails because of maths…what shud i do? remain in my sej class or switch 2 maths class
