A few days ago, advertisements came out in major newspapers announcing the new intake to Petronas-Instep institute, which will begin on July 2009.
The buzz it created caused thousand of interested applicants swarming the website and at one point, the spike of traffic caused the website crashing and had to be restored again.
The application was open from 29 March 2009 and will be closed on 7 April 2009 (5pm). All applications are to be made online, and the applicants would know the result on 21 April.
Instep, or Institut Teknologi Petronas is a training and educational center wholly owned by Petronas, the country’s major oil company. Located in Batu Rakit, Terengganu, Instep was founded in 1981 to train students and workers not only associated with Petronas but also other oil operators and vendors. Basically, the purpose of its establishment is to expose graduates to the oil and gas experience, particularly in the engineering and technical areas.
The latest intake offers 2 different petroleum related technology programs (e.g. Electrical, Instrumentation, Laboratory, Process and Mechanical), catering for Diploma holders and SPM leavers.

INSTEP or Institut Teknologi Petronas is a wholly owned training institute by Petronas, operated under its subsidiary Petronas Management Training Sdn Bhd.
INSTEP is one of the two major training units of the Petronas, aligned with the company’s mission to provide continuous learning platform and development for young people who aspire to make entry in the field of oil and gas.
It was established in 1981 and has been a key institution to supply skilled manpower for the petroleum company. Its main campus is located in Batu Rakit, Kuala Terengganu, occupying more than 50 acres of land.

To date, more than 5,000 technicians have been produced and trained, who went to work with not only Petronas, but also other big corporations including Amoco, Tioxide, Idemitsu, Eastment Chemical, Shell and others. INSTEP provides training, technical coaching, job opportunities as well as offering courses for school and diploma leavers, especially for those who are interested in the petroleum and petrochemical industry.
Staff from Petronas can upgrade their skills and knowledge by attending various programs including technical training and customized courses. In addition to this, INSTEP has also taken the advantage of the development in technology and IT by introducing online application through its website, instep-petronas.com, where students can save their time and hassle but submitting their details online.
Petronas today opens up its training program for Diploma graduates which will expose them to the oil and gas industry experience, mainly in the engineering and technical area.
In the program, successful candidates will undergo a so-called Petroleum Technology Program (PTP) course for a duration of 1 year. Trainees will also receive benefits that include training fees (so far amount undisclosed), subsistence allowance and accommodation.
The graduates are to be absorbed into different areas of operations and maintenance works for Petronas. Career disciplines offered are in the field of Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Lab and Process.
To be eligible for the program, candidates must satisfy the following requirements:
- A Malaysian citizen who possesses engineering Diploma with at least a CGPA of 2.5 from higher IPTA/IPTS institutions which are recognized by the government of Malaysia and the authoritative bodies
- Maximum 25 years old of age by 1 January 2008
- Single, with excellent health and not color blind
Interested candidates must apply online at Instep-Petronas website, where each application shall be charged RM10 (details of the application is given on the website). Basically, filling up the application form is similar to having an online account, where you will be given the user and password and access to your application account. You can update or amend your details for the application before the closing date. Closing date is 18 April 2008; all applications sent after the 18 will not be entertained.
