The Firm (NTV7) fails to live up to expectations?

By Zul • Jun 28th, 2007 • Category: Going entrepreneur

I feel sorry for NTV7 and the contestants of the reality show THE FIRM. Apparently many people now refer The Firm as a circus field filled with text-book wise, non-competent bunch of people. Out of the many contestants, it seems that Dr Jahar (or Johar) became the centre of attention and the talks of many. Not because he is charming and have a lot of charisma and leadership skills, but his lacking of those traits. Being a PHD holder, many expected him to deliver much more than that. A PHD holder in business field, he needs not only to be smart and intelligent, but able drive and motivate a team to deliver results .

But if you lack all of those skills, it will be only a matter of time before”‘you’re fired!”.

This is another testament to show that education alone is not a guarantee for you to be a success in the working and business world. In fact, even if you graduated with first class honors, don’t think lightly that you’ll soon fly high in the real world. Many months ago I wrote about my painful experience of shortlisting 5 top graduates but in the end all of them were rejected after the first stage.

Success in the reality world, whether in business or in jobs, requires much more than intelligence. Lim Goh Tong has proven it, Syed Mokhtar (Al Bukhary) has proven it, Boon Siew (honda) has proven it. Many others have proven it. The list goes on and on.

NTV7’s The Firm which was supposed to be Malaysia’s answer to Donald Trump hit show The Apprentice is nothing but rather catastrophic. Hope they will learn.

  1. Hey! an objective comment but wouldn’t it be too soon to judge a person or a show?

Lets discuss this in the blog http://thefirmntv7.blogspot.com

    See you soon

  2. You drama queen, you. Yes, the show highlighted the failures of someone with a lot of education. But did you ever think of the business aspects of the show? It’s showbusiness darling! Jahar makes for good TV. The slogan of the channel showing it is “The Feel Good Channel”. Don’t forget the entertainment part of the program. I have just been watching re-runs of The Apprentice, and the contestants are not all shown to be that great. They are often portrayed making mistakes, and that is what keeps viewers glued to the screen. This tactic seems to have been adopted for The Firm as well.

One more thing. By saying, “…is anything but catastrophic”, you are saying it is NOT catastrophic. Don’t think you meant to say that. ;-)

  5. I’m not so worried with the contestants. I think the show just show how poor the entrepreneurs who produced the show. It’s just plain boring — trying to imitate The Apprentice but failed miserably. They rushed to production and broadcast without being fully ready.

But at least they’ve tried. I hope their ‘failure’ won’t deter many more efforts. to advocate entrepreneurship to the masses in Malaysia. We do have one initiated by RTM which is of course supported by several govt agencies — not sure when that one will show on TV though.

  6. I kind of agree with the opinion that Dr. Jahar is no doubt full of knowledge by having both MBA and PHD which he mentioned he managed to do his doctorate in a 2.5 year. (Wow, that’s is awesome) however, he seems can not apply well those knowledge in a real business world. To be frank, he is quite young and most of the time deal with the books rather than the real issues.

In the first episode, he was just lucky not to get kicked out. He should though together with the girl. Dr. Jahar was such a bad leader and when he conducted the meeting, all of them was looking at him like a joker. He was giving his team members lecture on strategy for the first five hours.

Anyway, what is most annoying me is tough as someone who has MBA and PHD especially in business fields, Dr. Jahar should be more fluent in his communication. His english is terrible and annoying. It is a total ashame when you see someone who has high education but yet poor in communication. I hope he can poolish his english and communication to be better after the show.

  11. I personally feel disaapointed with the last show regarding the PENTIUM program, the marketing guy from Pentium is suck and doesn’t know what he said..” SELL as much as you can!!”. Hey! come on, at the end I feel the objective must be very very clear.
If he can be a person incharged for Intel, i think it can be anyone, as I feel how come a head of division will not understand his message is so important for others?

How to expect a group of people (maybe you can treat them like promoters), to be so understand about the knowledge of PENTIUM and to EDUCATE consumer? ?? Jokes!!@

I feel it is a joke! Basically if one of the dynamic team was sacked. i think THE FIRM is not a show i will watch anymore. Luckily, NTV7 made a good decission to keep all the member in Dynamic team.

    That’s all my comment!!

  16. I can’t wait to watch the second season. The show’s awesome. It’s almost as dramatic as Desperate Housewives. I wonder if the men in this season will start crying too.
