The Maxis Scholarship Award


Maxis scholarship award, known as The Maxis Scholarship of Excellence is awarded to young and outstanding Malaysians who have successfully gained entry to top universities in the US and UK. The scholarship is available to those pursuing postgraduate studies at the world’s most prestigious universities.

The award seeks to identify and create a pool of talented Malaysians who are likely to be future leaders and decision-makers in their chosen fields, either in Malaysia or internationally.The scholarship is also aimed to provide an opportunity for the individuals to undertake post-graduate and professional studies at globally recognized institutions of excellence and higher learning.

The scholarship is funded by Maxis under their Corporate Social Responsibility campaign. In the award campaign, 5 successful applicants will be awarded the scholarship to pursue postgraduate courses in the following:

  • Life Sciences and Medicine
  • Medicine
  • Business Management Studies
  • Law and Government Studies
  • The Performing Arts

The applicants must have also already gained entry/admittance to a top world university either in the UK or US, as well as having the following criteria:

  • 30 years old of age and below
  • Degree graduate from a recognized institution and having achieved a final result of minimally a 2nd Class Upper Hons (or equivalent)
  • Having a working experience of not less than 3 years
  • Possess strong aptitude and appetite for current and latest (e.g. general knowledge of Malaysia’s constitutional and legal frame, economic condition, government initiative and nation building)
  • Demonstrated achievements and continuous involvement in extra curricular activities (team and individual sports, voluntary service, affiliation and other associations)
  • Willing to carry out role as an ‘ambassador’ for Malaysia, carrying the right Malaysian values to be exhibited to other foreigners, with strong sense of loyalty and identification for the country.

There will be no scholarship bond after the end of the studies but Maxis will expect the recipient to collaborate closely with Maxis for to promote new cultural consciousness and competence in the community and country. In 2006, 3 people won the scholarship award to pursue their dreams of studying in the world class universities. The 3 are:

  1. Ananthi Ramiah – PhD in Psychology at Oxford University, UK
  2. Boo Kian Seng – MS in Material Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at Oxford University, UK
  3. Abd Aziz Abd Bakar – MA in Business Management at Harvard University, US
