Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, UPNM (or National Defense University of Malaysia) was formerly known as ATMA (Akademi Tentera Malaysia) and is the first country’s defense university which offers Degree courses together with the essential military training to the Cadet Officers of the Malaysian Army (ATM).
In a way, UPNM provides one of the best channels for those who aspire to join the Malaysian Army, as upon graduation, he or she will be absorbed immediately into the officer ranks. The institution also offers degree courses for civilians.
The establishment of the university, which costs RM500 million, is aligned with the government’s intention to become a premier institution that offers academic courses which are blended together with military training and research in defense.
Officially, UPNM enrolled its first for the 2007/2008 session, but it has actually began offering Degree courses earlier than that, which was done through collaboration with the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, UTM, and to date has produced more than 1000 graduates in the field of Engineering, Science and Management. These graduates were inducted as full officers and are attached with the Malaysian Army (ATM), Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) as well as in the Government sector.
For the 2007/2008 session, about 550 undergraduate students enrolled, of which 350 are army graduates, and 121 civilian graduates. And as of today, the institution has a total of 1,3000 undergraduates, with more than 1200 Cadet Officers.
The main campus of UPNM is now located inside the Army’s Sungai Besi camp, Kuala Lumpur. Click here to visit the official website of Universiti Pertahanan Malaysia.
