The Universiti Teknologi Petronas or UTP was born in 1997 after the government of Malaysia approached the management of its wholly-owned oil company, Petronas, and suggested Petronas to venture into education and set up their own university.
UTP’s very first campus started in Bangi with merely 65 students, which was then known as Institut Teknologi Petronas (ITP) before moving to its current campus in Tronoh, Perak, taking over an engineering faculty formerly owned by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The present campus was built on a massive land size of 1,000 acres. The current appointed Chancellor of UTP is the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
The first batch of UTP completed their studies 2001 and the university’s first graduation ceremony for about 150 graduates was held in the same year. A year before that UTP introduced its first offering of postgraduate courses.
UTP mainly offers engineering and technology driven courses for the students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and pay particular attention to research and development (R&D) work.
Throughout its inception and operation, the university has successfully obtained accreditations from various bodies including from the National Accreditation Board, Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and IChemE (The Institution of Chemical Engineers) UK for a wide range of courses.
Some of the courses offered by UTP, among others, are Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Business Information System and Information & Communication Technology. The annual or yearly fee for each of the courses ranges between RM1300 to RM1700, and each course lasts between 3 to 4 years. Petronas also offers scholarship for eligible, selected students.
