At 828 meters (2717 feet), the world’s tallest building, Burj Dubai finally opens with high anticipation on Monday, despite the sorry condition of the property market in UAE. There is also a major surprise – the skyscraper will be renamed to Burj Khalifa, in an honor to the ruler of Abu Dhabi.
The so-called “vertical city” consists of luxury apartments, houses, offices and a hotel specially designed by Giorgio Armani. It also intends to break more records by constructing the world’s highest mosque and the highest swimming pool.
The mosque is planned to be build on the 158th floor while the swimming pool will be on the 76th floor.
Many property prices around Dubai at the moment dropped in continuation of last year’s financial crisis, which was the result of easy credit and the overbuilding of properties. Burj Dubai’s progress was in danger of stalling but then come the ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa Zayed al-Nahyan, who pumped tens of billions to Dubai last year to revive the economy. Sheikh Khalifa Zayed is also the UAE President.

With the height of 2717 feet, Burj Khalifa is more than 1000 feet higher compared to the Taipei 101 building of Taiwan, which measures 1,667 (508 meters). Taipei 101 has been the world’s tallest building since 2004.
