Try Harder Is Not The Best Advice

It can be quite disheartening when you get rejected of a job application, one after another. It gets worse, almost depressing when the phone is silent after tons of application had been emailed out.

Why am I not being short listed for a job? All my peers had already been offered, why am I the only unlucky one? Aaargghh…what’s wrong with me?

Your self-esteem got affected. You start to lose your self-confidence. And you start to blame the government, the job portals, the employers, the Consultants and almost everyone else.

And when you start to share with your friends, as well meaning and good intention they may be, telling you to “Try harder” may not always be the best mantra. Yes, I will tell you to get away from friends like that.

When you are in a hole, you do not need another smart alec telling you to try harder to get out from the hole. Rather, you should be hearing, “Don’t try harder by climbing anymore. Perhaps you should try shouting.” Yes, trying harder is not always the best advice. Try different is.

If you have been using the same resume and send out application using the same method, and not generating any results, your outcome may still probably be the same even if you put in ten times more the effort.

Rather, you should be asking, Is there anything else I can do differently? Can I do something different to my resume to make it more appealing? Besides this job, are there other relevant positions that I should also be exploring? Besides this method, is there other way of applying for this job? Are there other ways of getting myself noticed?
