Which job is for me?

Got this email from Ms Yee quite some time ago, and while I was clearing old emails and logs, I thought it might be useful for me to post the discussion in this blog for job seekers perusal.

Q:

Dear Z Musa,

I got impressed by your website. It is a good marketing idea to suit the current employment market.

Apparently, i have two employment offers and i am in the dilemma to pick a right one. One is consulting (a local company in strategic business advisory) and another is manufacturing (a newly set up MNC in Malaysia & has a unique product, good market potential in asia pacific and advanced technology from Germany) and i can forsee both have a very bright career future. I like both scope of works as well.

May be you can enlighten me on this so that i can make a right decision.

regards, yee

Dear Yee,

Thank you for your +ve feedback.

Followings are criteria that I’ll look into in making consideration.

1. The company position, reputation and direction.
If it’s an established company, where’s the positioning? Is it one of the industry leaders (top 3)? Is it public listed or going to?
If it’s new, which direction is the company heading? Where do you think the company will be 5 years from now?

2. Growth opportunity
Being one of the pioneer staff gives you tremendous opportunity for growth and rewards, provided the company is headed in the right direction.

3. Marketability
If let’s say you decide to move on 3 years from now, which one will provide a broader opportunity (easier for you to find relevant organization) for you?

4. Compensation and benefits.
This should be part of the consideration but do not make it priority. Job satisfaction, environment and experience is more important.

If you really up for a challenge than option 2 (manufacturing) seems a more interesting option, but I’ll leave the final say to you.

Good luck
