3rd of January 2010 marks an adventurous trip for a woman, Katie Spotz. She is trying to row across the Atlantic Ocean solo in order to raise $30,000 for Blue Planet Run charity organisation. Blue Planet Run aims to raise funds for clean water projects around the world. They have partnered with athletes and NGO to raise funds for more clean water projects.
At the age of 22, Katie will be the youngest person and also the first American to row across the Atlantic Ocean, if she succeed. She is now in her one-woman row boat cruising for 2,500 miles in about 100 days. She will not be seeing any other human being for the next three months. However, she is equipped with a few gadgets to help her connect to the world.
She is carrying with her these items:
- water desalination machine
- GPS unit
- radios
- satellite phone (for texts and Twitter updates)
- laptop (update her blog)
She can even conduct interviews with her satellite phone when she is resting. Google Earth on the other hand will update her location every 20 minutes.
This is not the first extreme activity Katie is doing. In fact, she swam the whole length of Allegheny River to raise awareness about clean drinking water, a year ago. She said, “Once I finished one challenge, I realized maybe I could do something even bigger.”
Good luck Katie!
