Would You Pay RM42,000 for a Laptop?

Would you pay RM42,320 (US$12,540) for an Acer laptop? No right thinking man would. With that kind of money, at least you should get a dozen, not just one unit.

But that was the exact price paid by Mara (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) to bring two units of Acer Aspire laptops into Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Balik Pulau in Penang (Source: The Star), paying a total of RM84,640 for the total two.

Additionally, the body also bought 19-inch and 17-inch monitors which cost RM8,500 and RM7,5000 respectively. The market prices for both are RM5,350 and RM6,500 each.

Quoting the news,

” In reply, Mara said the equipment were purchased in a lump sump and there was no price breakdown for the laptops.

The price breakdown was only done after the equipment was supplied for the purpose assets record and it could not be used as a basis for reference.”

Perhaps someone needs to go to a calculus refresher course. There can only be two possibilities here – downright stupidity or simply a blatant corruption. In this case, perhaps the latter would be more suited. Let’s wait for the responsible people to be hauled up.

yeah right, they bought it with normal market price, but then make a claim with hell more than what they pay so that they can get some “commission”. this is nasty business here.

  2. You think the Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Balik Pulau in Penang is bad you should think about the stuff they did at all the other MARA places since MARA has budget to build new buildings or campus every year.
